ITV is set to dive into the Tudor era with Majesty, a fresh period drama that reimagines the formative years of Elizabeth I in the court of King Henry VIII. This ambitious series comes from a collaboration between three former Grey’s Anatomy showrunners—Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and William Harper—alongside acclaimed director James Strong.

According to reports, the storyline of Majesty explores Elizabeth’s early life through the lens of conspiracy theories that swirled around her upbringing. The trio of creators, known for their work on Grey’s Anatomy and Fire Country, describes the show as a mix of drama, humor, and intrigue.

Majesty is an emotional, funny, and contemporary-feeling alternate history about how three outsiders try to stay alive while hiding a secret that, if discovered, would rock England to its foundations,” the creators said adding that the “show is pure wish-fulfilment of how people devoted to the public good suddenly find themselves in a position to make a difference.”

James Strong, who directed ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office and hits like Broadchurch and Vigil, will helm the series. Strong, whose production company is backing the project, praised the scripts as “a director’s dream.”

“We get to reimagine and recreate an iconic piece of English history and tell a period story that looks stunning,” he said.

Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, called Majesty “a perfect illustration of the range of drama we want to see on ITV,” emphasizing its appeal to UK audiences. Set to begin filming next year, Majesty marks the first major project from Strong’s Studiocanal-backed production company, Strong Film & Television. The series will be distributed by Studiocanal, with casting announcements expected soon. With Majesty, ITV taps into the enduring fascination with the Tudors while offering a fresh and inventive narrative.
