The BBC has acquired the UK rights to The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a five-part adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, as per Variety exclusive report. Starring Jacob Elordi, Ciarán Hinds, and Odessa Young, the series will air on BBC One and stream on iPlayer. While a premiere date is yet to be announced, viewers in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can catch the series on Prime Video.
Elordi portrays Dorrigo Evans, a man whose life spans extremes—from a passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney (Young) to the brutality of a POW camp and his eventual rise as a celebrated surgeon and reluctant war hero. Hinds takes on the role of an older Evans. Directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Shaun Grant, the series is produced by Sony-backed Curio Pictures and presented by Amazon MGM Studios.
Sue Deeks, BBC’s head of program acquisition, described the series as “a complex, beautiful, and heart-wrenching” adaptation, adding, “We are so very pleased to bring this truly exceptional adaptation to BBC viewers.” Executive producers Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner called it an “epic tale of the sustaining power of love under the harshest of circumstances.”
Produced by Alexandra Taussig alongside Porter, Gardner, Kurzel, Grant, and Flanagan, the series received principal funding from Screen Australia and support from the NSW Government’s Made in NSW and PDV Funds. The adaptation promises to bring Flanagan’s compelling narrative to life with its stellar cast and creative team.
