Indian actor Konkona Sen Sharma, known for acclaimed performances in Killer Soup and Wake Up Sid, will headline the comedy feature Mis(s)chief, opposite Spanish actor Carlos Bardem (El Cid), according to Varity exclusive report. The announcement was made during the Film Bazaar at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
Produced by U.K.-India outfit Avani Films, the project is currently in development and has progressed to the second round of the prestigious 2025 Sundance Development Labs as a curated entry.
Mis(s)chief centers on Rumi, a mother of two juggling the chaos of filmmaking, a failing marriage, and the occasional bullet from a gangster she inadvertently crosses paths with—all while navigating the whirlwind of her children’s schoolwork.
Sen Sharma expressed her enthusiasm for the film, said, “I am delighted by the comic premise, the representation of women and the writing itself.”
British filmmaker Peter Webber is on board as executive producer, while Emmy-nominated casting director Nancy Bishop is assembling an international ensemble.
Writer-director Anu Vaidyanathan, who is at the helm of the project, highlighted the casting synergy, said, “I believe Konkona’s lived experience is closest to our protagonist Rumi, who is trying to balance motherhood and filmmaking. Having witnessed life on both sides of the camera as an actor and a director, I am thrilled to have two legendary actors, Konkona and Carlos, to help me bring this story and these characters to life.”
Avani Films has also been spotlighting other projects at Film Bazaar. The dramatic series Modern Times, in development since 2020, delves into family and migration through parallel narratives set in pre-independence India, contemporary Berlin, and San Francisco.
The series has notable pedigree, with development overseen by Peter Ansorge, a former Channel 4 drama commissioner known for celebrated productions such as A Very British Coup and Traffik.
Avani Films’ thriller Candy has also been selected for the prestigious producer’s workshop at Film Bazaar, marking another milestone for the production house.
