Melissa Barrera, known for her breakout role in In the Heights, has parted ways with her talent agency WME after a partnership that began in 2019. According to Deadlines exclusive report that the actress made the decision to leave the agency herself.

Barrera remains represented by Sugar 23 management, ImPRint, and the law firm Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman. The decision to exit WME follows a year marked by both professional milestones and controversy.

In late 2023, Barrera was dismissed from the upcoming Scream VII by Spyglass Media due to social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict, which the studio deemed antisemitic. Addressing the fallout, Barrera stated on Instagram, “First and foremost I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.”

Despite the controversy, Barrera has stayed busy with significant projects. She starred in Your Monster, a romantic genre film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and appeared in Universal’s Abigail. She is currently filming an untitled James Wan thriller series for Peacock alongside Simu Liu.

Barrera’s forthcoming projects include The Collaboration, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, where she stars opposite Daniel Brühl and Paul Bettany. The film explores the relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Additionally, Barrera will headline In the Cradle of Granite, a Western thriller marking Ariel Escalante’s English-language debut.

Her career first gained traction with the Starz series Vida, in which she portrayed one of two Mexican-American sisters navigating family revelations in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles.
