Max’s upcoming original series The Eastern Gate, led by Polish-American actress Lena Góra, is set to premiere globally on 31 January. The series, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jan P. Matuszynski, dives deep into the high-stakes world of modern espionage and the geopolitical intricacies of hybrid warfare.
Set against the backdrop of growing global unrest, The Eastern Gate follows Ewa Oginiec, portrayed by Góra, a Secret Service agent looking to leave her turbulent career behind after a personal tragedy. Her plans unravel when her partner and fellow agent is exposed by Russian intelligence and disappears under mysterious circumstances.
The series highlights the high-pressure operations of intelligence agencies and the delicate balance of power in Europe, focusing on the Suwałki Gap—a strategically critical area bordering NATO members Poland and Lithuania, as well as Belarus and Russia. This location is recognized as one of Europe’s most vulnerable regions and a key to NATO’s eastern defenses.
In a statement, Góra shared her passion for the series, said “The world feels more divided than ever, yet in some ways, united by a shared sense of confusion. As a Polish-American artist, I feel a deep responsibility to bridge these perspectives, connecting the history and realities of Eastern Europe with a global audience.”
Returning to Poland for the project held particular meaning for the actress. She added, “Returning to Poland for The Eastern Gate allowed me to delve into the complexities of our time, portraying a female secret agent navigating the precarious moments leading up to the Ukraine war. This project is meaningful to me, much like my last film, Erupcja, as it seeks to shed light on universal confusions through the lens of our shared human experience.”
With its focus on the mechanisms of provocation and the complex dynamics of hybrid warfare, The Eastern Gate promises a gripping exploration of espionage in today’s volatile geopolitical climate.
