Matt Smith takes on a daring new role in Sky’s six-part series The Death of Bunny Munro, adapted from Nick Cave’s cult novel. The first-look image reveals Smith as the titular Bunny Munro, clad in nothing but his underwear in a laundromat, about to light a cigarette. Beside him stands newcomer Rafael Mathé, who plays Bunny Junior, his young son.
Billed as both a “wild cautionary tale” and a “tender portrait of a father and son,” the series follows Bunny Munro, a sex-addicted door-to-door beauty product salesman grappling with grief after his wife, Libby, dies by suicide. According to the synopsis, Bunny embarks on a chaotic road trip across Southern England with his 9-year-old son, attempting to juggle his own spiraling life and his responsibilities as a father. Bunny Junior, meanwhile, copes with his loss by conversing with his mother’s ghost and coming to terms with his father’s deeply flawed nature.
The series features a stellar ensemble cast, including Sarah Greene as Libby, Johann Myers as Poodle, Robert Glenister as Geoffrey, Alice Feetham as Yvonne, David Threlfall as Bunny Senior, Lindsay Duncan as Doris Pennington, and Elizabeth Berrington as Charlotte Parnovar.
Written by BAFTA winner Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and directed by Isabella Eklöf (Industry), the show is slated for a 2025 release. Smith, along with Cave, Jackson, and Eklöf, serves as an executive producer. The series is produced by Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer) in association with Sky Studios, with Matthew Mulot producing.
Fans of Smith and Cave’s distinctive storytelling can expect an emotionally charged and darkly humorous exploration of grief, masculinity, and redemption.
