Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s debut feature All We Imagine As Light has achieved a historic milestone with two prestigious nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. The film is in the running for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Director – Motion Picture,
The 38-year-old Kapadia is the first Indian woman filmmaker to get nominated in Gloden Globe for Best director category. Following the nominations, Kapadia shared her gratitude, told Hindustan Times, “I’m deeply honoured by this nomination and grateful to the HFPA for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theaters—please go watch it and support us.”
Set in Mumbai, the film weaves a compelling narrative about love, friendship, and life through the lens of three women. Earlier this year, it became the first Indian feature to win the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival, establishing its reputation on the global stage.
At the Golden Globes, the film faces tough competition in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category, with contenders like Emilia Perez (France), The Girl With the Needle (Poland), and I’m Still Here (Brazil). Kapadia’s directorial prowess will be tested against celebrated filmmakers including Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Edward Berger (Conclave), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), and Sean Baker (Anora).
Although All We Imagine As Light wasn’t chosen as India’s official entry for the International Feature Film category at the Oscars, it has carved a strong path in the awards circuit. It was named Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and earned accolades at the Gotham Awards. Sight & Sound Magazine also hailed it as the #1 film of the year in their annual list of the 50 best movies.
The film, distributed in the US by Janus Films and Sideshow, is gaining momentum in India through Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media. With its Golden Globe nominations, Kapadia’s work is being hailed as a beacon for Indian cinema, offering a promising lead-up to the Oscars.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place on 5 January, 2025, in Los Angeles.
