Yash Raj Films (YRF) has officially announced Mardaani 3, the next chapter in its highly acclaimed female-led franchise. The series, which has been celebrated for over a decade, will once again feature Rani Mukerji reprising her role as the fearless cop Shivani Shivaji Roy. On the anniversary of Mardaani 2’s release, YRF confirmed the third installment, describing it as “dark, deadly, and brutal.”
Rani Mukerji, regarded as one of Indian cinema’s finest actors, holds the unique distinction of leading a blockbuster solo franchise in Hindi cinema. The Mardaani series has earned widespread admiration and cult status among cinephiles. Speaking about the upcoming film, Rani expressed excitement for the next chapter, said, “Mardaani 3 will be dark, deadly and brutal. Shivani Shivaji Roy is back, and this time her nemesis will be pure evil.”
The film marks a creative collaboration between Aditya Chopra and two emerging talents from YRF’s team. Aayush Gupta, known for his critically acclaimed work on The Railway Men, has penned the script. His previous work was lauded globally, with the series becoming a benchmark for Indian streaming content. Aayush’s writing has been described as gut-wrenching and hard-hitting, qualities that promise to elevate the intensity of Mardaani 3.
Abhiraj Minawala will direct the film, bringing his extensive experience from assisting on major YRF productions such as Band Baaja Baaraat, Gunday, Sultan, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and Tiger 3. Abhiraj is also currently the Associate Director on War 2. Aditya Chopra, who has mentored Abhiraj throughout his career, now entrusts him with steering the blockbuster Mardaani franchise forward.
With its gripping narrative, empowered direction, and the return of Rani Mukerji’s Shivani Roy, Mardaani 3 promises to be another milestone in Indian cinema.
