The sequel to Wicked now has an official title: “Wicked: For Good.” Universal Pictures revealed the news following the overwhelming success of Wicked: Part One, which set box office records and earned multiple Golden Globe nominations. Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel has captivated audiences worldwide.
Wicked: Part One, which opened in November 2023, grossed $359 million domestically and over $524 million globally, making it the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation at the domestic box office. Its sequel, Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters on November 21, 2025. The new title draws inspiration from the powerful Act 2 song “For Good,” which reflects the emotional journey of Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship — a bond that changes both of them forever.
Director Jon M. Chu teased the emotional weight of the upcoming sequel, describing it as “a doozy” in an interview with Variety. “I did not know the context of where we’d be in society right now. It becomes eight times more relevant than before when you’re talking about truth and consequences of making the right or wrong choices,” he said. “It’s intense.”
Set in the land of Oz before Dorothy follows the Yellow Brick Road, Wicked explores the origins of Elphaba, later known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. The first film introduced audiences to their formative years at Shiz University, where the unlikely duo went from reluctant roommates to lifelong friends. Wicked: For Good will pick up the story after Elphaba fully embraces her powers and is labeled an enemy of the state by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).
The first film’s success has only amplified excitement for the sequel, especially after Erivo and Grande earned Golden Globe nominations for their portrayals of Elphaba and Glinda. The film itself was also recognized in the Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Box Office Achievement categories. With its soaring score by Stephen Schwartz and screenplay co-written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, the Wicked franchise continues to strike a chord with audiences globally.
