Former JNU student Umar Khalid has been granted seven days’ interim bail from 28 December to 3 January, 2025, by a Delhi court. The relief allows Khalid to attend his first cousin’s wedding and meet family members, under strict conditions.
Khalid, who is facing charges in connection with the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020, had requested interim bail to attend the wedding of his cousin, set for January 1 at Masjid Ishaat Islam, Abul Fazal Enclave in New Delhi. His plea also included attending related pre-wedding functions, such as the haldi and mehendi ceremonies on 30-31 December and meeting his sister, who is arriving from the US. Khalid specified he would not be attending the wedding reception in Nagpur and would remain in Delhi.
Shahdara District Court Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai granted the interim bail with the condition that Khalid must furnish a personal bond of Rs 20,000. The court’s order specifies that Khalid may only meet family, relatives, and friends and is restricted to his home or the wedding venues. Social media use is strictly prohibited during this period.
Khalid is currently facing charges of being involved in a pre-planned conspiracy to incite riots in Northeast Delhi between 23-25 February, 2020. These charges include violations of the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). While his interim bail plea was granted, his regular bail request remains pending before the Delhi High Court, where a division bench heard his case on 6 December. During that hearing, Khalid’s counsel pointed out that he had already completed a significant portion of his sentence in the offences against him.
