James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy is set to reimagine the iconic superhero for a new era, blending the familiar with heartfelt new dimensions. From tender moments between Superman and Lois Lane to scenes of vulnerability featuring a battered Man of Steel, the film promises to strike an emotional chord with audiences.

One standout scene from the trailer has already captured fans’ hearts: a bloodied Superman, lying in the snow, calls out to his loyal pup, “Krypto, take me home!” Gunn’s vision brings Krypto the Dog into the spotlight alongside other DC heroes, including Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).

“This is a movie about kindness. It’s a movie about being good,” Gunn said during a trailer press event, emphasizing the deeper emotional core of his Superman. The film also explores the challenges of being a superhero in the modern world, portraying Superman as both powerful and profoundly vulnerable—an image far removed from the invincible icon we’ve come to expect.

Starring David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman: Legacy kicks off Gunn’s new vision for DC Studios, titled the “Gods and Monsters” phase. The film marks the fourth major cinematic adaptation of the character by Warner Bros, following the iconic 1978 Superman with Christopher Reeve, 2006’s Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, and 2013’s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill.

Gunn is also breaking with tradition by introducing other DC superheroes early in this first installment, instead of reserving them for sequels. “I think it’s very important that we’re creating a universe,” Gunn explained. “In this world, it’s not normal to see a superhero, like it’s not normal to see a fighter jet overhead. It’s a part of what this world is. In the movie, he has his friends at work and his friends at play,” he added.
