Tulip Siddiq, Labour’s anti-corruption minister and economic secretary, has been named in court documents relating to allegations of a multi-billion-dollar embezzlement scandal tied to Bangladesh’s Rooppur nuclear power project.

The High Court Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court received a writ alleging that Siddiq, alongside her aunt, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, facilitated meetings with Russian officials in connection with the project.

The documents reference an online report from August, claiming $5 billion (£3.9 billion) was misappropriated through inflated construction costs, with funds allegedly siphoned off “in collusion with Russian officials.”

According to the court filing, Siddiq is said to have received part of the embezzled funds. The nuclear power plant, primarily funded by the Russian government, has faced scrutiny over its financial dealings, sparking international attention.

Sky News has reported that Siddiq’s role is highlighted in allegations that she helped organize high-level meetings with Russian representatives regarding the project.

Neither Siddiq nor her office has publicly commented on the accusations, which come at a time of heightened focus on financial crime and illicit finance—issues she oversees in her ministerial role.

This case marks a significant development in ongoing investigations into corruption linked to major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh.
