Paramount Pictures is charging full speed ahead with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, officially announcing a fourth installment set to hit theaters in spring 2027, according to Variety exclusive.
The announcement coincides with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which opens this Friday. The third film is expected to dominate the box office, with projections of $55 to $60 million from 3,800 theaters across North America. With strong holiday season appeal, Sonic 3 is also launching internationally in 52 markets on Christmas. Early reviews are glowing, with the film earning an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first two Sonic films have been monumental for Paramount, grossing $725.2 million globally and generating over $180 million in consumer spending through home entertainment. The franchise’s success has extended to streaming, with the spinoff series Knuckles debuting on Paramount+ earlier this year.
Jeff Fowler, who directed all three previous films, returns to helm Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The cast includes franchise favorites Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik (and also playing Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather in the latest film), Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Fan-favorite Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, makes a significant appearance in the third movie, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey.
While plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 remain tightly guarded, fans can look forward to more high-speed adventures from the beloved Sega video game hero, who first burst onto the scene in 1991.
