Netflix has shared the first look and debut date for its upcoming crime drama series, The Åre Murders, set in the picturesque Swedish town of Åre. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, Åre provides the perfect backdrop for this gripping mystery, based on the works of Swedish author Viveca Sten. The series is adapted from Sten’s bestselling books Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows, both part of The Åre Murders series, which have sold over 10 million copies and been published in more than 40 countries.
“The Åre Murders means a lot to me and I’m very excited that it’s now time for the TV series to see the light of day on a leading streaming service like Netflix! Both as the author of the books and executive producer of the series, it’s hugely exciting to see the characters come to life through such talented actors. My dream, of course, is that the TV series will be just as popular and successful as the books have been both in Sweden and abroad,” said Viveca Sten.
The series will be available for global streaming on Netflix from 6 February, 2025, bringing Sten’s beloved characters and chilling mysteries to a new audience. The plot centers on Hanna Ahlander, a police officer who, after being suspended from her job in Stockholm and enduring a painful breakup, relocates to her sister’s vacation home in Åre. When a young woman mysteriously disappears on the icy night of Lucia, Hanna begins investigating the case despite her personal turmoil. Local officer Daniel Lindskog, struggling with a lack of resources, reluctantly accepts Hanna’s assistance—though the question remains: can they trust one another?
The series features a stellar cast, including Carla Sehn, Kardo Razzazi, Charlie Gustafsson, Francisco Sobrado, Amalia Holm, Frida Argento, Agnes Kittelsen, Jon Øigarden, Robin Stegmar, Olle Sarri, Samuel Astor, and Moa Gammel. Directed by Joakim Eliasson and Alain Darborg, with scripts written by Karin Gidfors and Jimmy Lindgren, The Åre Murders promises a compelling blend of suspense and drama. Nea Asphäll and Benjam Orre are credited as the Directors of Photography, with Brita H Lundqvist producing and Tim King, Susann Billberg-Rydholm, and Viveca Sten serving as executive producers. The production company behind the series is SF Studios.
