American Airlines brought all its U.S. flights to a halt Tuesday morning due to a “technical issue” as described by the company. The disruption left holiday travelers stranded and airports buzzing with confusion as the airline worked to address the problem.

“A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning,” an airline spokesperson confirmed to CNN. “Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” said the spokesperson.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an advisory notice at the airline’s request, confirming the nationwide ground stop. However, the FAA deferred further inquiries to American Airlines, which has yet to provide a specific timetable for resolving the problem.

Passengers traveling during the busy holiday season took to social media to express their frustration with delays and diversions. In a video widely circulated from Fort Lauderdale Airport, an overwhelmed airport staffer was heard informing passengers over the tannoy, “Our system is down” and explaining that even crew members could not be boarded.

The airline attempted to reassure customers on social media platform X, stating, “Your safety is our utmost priority, once this is rectified, we’ll have you safely on your way to your destination.”

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of airline disruptions during peak travel periods. Last year, Southwest Airlines suffered a catastrophic meltdown that saw over 16,900 flights canceled due to operational failures compounded by severe winter weather. Millions of passengers were stranded, and the airline faced a $140 million fine from the U.S. government in 2023.
