EVERWONDER STUDIO, DLP MEDIA GROUP, & FIVE ALL IN THE FIFTH TO PRODUCE
Netflix has announced a gripping new sports documentary series that delves into the life of legendary boxer and cultural icon Mike Tyson. As the youngest heavyweight champion in history, crowned at just 20 years old in 1986, Tyson’s legacy extends far beyond the boxing ring. The series will chronicle his meteoric rise as the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” his struggles with finances, substance abuse, and in-ring controversies, as well as his time in incarceration and ultimate journey of redemption. Through an unflinching lens, the series aims to reveal the complexities of the man behind the gloves, capturing both his triumphs and trials.
Presented in three 60-minute episodes, the documentary is a collaboration between EverWonder Studio, DLP Media Group, and Five All In The Fifth. Directed by Floyd Russ (Untold: Malice at the Palace, American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, Zion), the series is backed by a stellar team of executive producers, including Ian Orefice of EverWonder Studio, Jim Gray of Scratchy Productions, Michael Hughes and Greg C. Lake of DLP Media Group, and Douglas Banker of Five All In The Fifth.
Mike Tyson said,
“Having an opportunity to share my story through the reflective lens of my growth and maturity in a multi-part documentary on Netflix will be a challenging journey, yet a very welcoming one,”
“Most people are too scared to look at their lives objectively, wanting to paint themselves as the hero of their own story. But if we are truly objective, we know we can never be the hero in our own story. We have to be able to face the man in the mirror, taking the good with the bad to give a full account of our contributions in this life. Netflix is the perfect platform to tell my story because of their global reach.”
This announcement follows the record-breaking Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing event, which became the most-streamed global sporting event of all time. The massive success further cements Tyson’s enduring appeal across generations, making this Netflix project a highly anticipated addition to the platform’s sports programming.
Netflix has positioned itself as a premier destination for captivating sports storytelling. The Tyson documentary will join an impressive lineup of sports series and films, including Enigma: Aaron Rodgers, Simone Biles Rising, Quarterback, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Full Swing. The platform has also expanded into live sports programming, partnering with organizations such as the NFL, NBA, FIFA, and WWE.
For fans and newcomers alike, the Mike Tyson series promises an intimate and raw portrayal of one of the most compelling and controversial athletes in history, offering an unfiltered glimpse into the man behind the gloves.
