The journey to the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards officially begins as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) reveals its longlist of nominees. A total of 80 feature films have advanced from an initial pool of 235 entries, vying for recognition across 25 categories, including the newly introduced Children’s & Family Film category.

BAFTA’s unique three-round voting process is underway. Round Two, beginning today, will determine nominations set to be unveiled on Wednesday, 15 January 2025. The announcement will be livestreamed globally from BAFTA’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London, by Mia McKenna-Bruce (2024 EE Rising Star Award winner) and Will Sharpe, a BAFTA winner.

The final winners will be determined in Round Three, with the ceremony hosted by actor David Tennant at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 16 February 2025. The event will be broadcast on BBC One, iPlayer, BritBox, and other international platforms.

Anna Higgs, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, highlighted the diversity and creativity of this year’s contenders, said, “Huge congratulations to the 80 films that have made it to the longlist. From independent gems to global blockbusters, this year’s lineup reflects the incredible breadth of talent in today’s film industry.”

Higgs also emphasized the ripple effect of awards buzz on cinema-going audiences. “BAFTA’s research shows that the excitement around the Film Awards directly boosts cinema attendance, bringing audiences closer to the magic of filmmaking,” said Higgs,

This year also introduces a significant addition to the festival—the Children’s & Family Film category—to celebrate intergenerational storytelling. It marks the first new category in five years, underscoring BAFTA’s commitment to evolving with audience and industry trends.

As BAFTA marks the 20th anniversary of the EE Rising Star Award, nominees will be announced on Tuesday, 7 January 2025, with the winner determined by public vote and revealed at the February ceremony.
