The final chapter of Gavin & Stacey has cemented its place in television history, shattering records to become the UK’s most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streaming platforms since 2002. According to the latest data, the highly anticipated finale has already garnered 19.3 million viewers, with numbers still climbing.

The record-breaking figures surpass the show’s own milestone set by its 2019 Christmas special, which drew 18.5 million viewers within 28 days. The finale, which aired on Christmas Day, initially attracted 12.3 million viewers, marking the biggest overnight audience for the holiday since 2008. Over 6 million viewers have since tuned in via catch-up, putting the episode on track to exceed 20 million when the full 28-day ratings are published.

According to report, a significant portion of its audience comes from younger viewers, with 4.2 million aged 16–34. This makes it the most-watched scripted show among young audiences since records began in 2002.

Reacting to the overwhelming success, creators James Corden and Ruth Jones said, “We are completely overwhelmed by the audience response to our show and to these astonishing viewing figures. Gavin & Stacey really does belong to the audience, and we are beyond thrilled that so many people enjoyed watching it this Christmas. A huge thank you to Charlotte Moore and the BBC for backing us these past 17 years.”

Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, echoed their sentiments, said, “The numbers are truly outstanding, unprecedented even! It’s the show the entire nation has been talking about over the last week, so it’s no surprise that it’s not only smashed its own record but has become the UK’s biggest scripted show! Ruth Jones and James Corden’s creation is a true homegrown success story, and their finale is a comedy masterpiece. It’s made us laugh and cry together in a way that only Gavin & Stacey can.”

Created, written, and executive produced by Ruth Jones and James Corden, Gavin & Stacey: The Finale is a Tidy and Fulwell73 production for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
