Israel has confirmed the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, following his arrest during a raid on 27 December, 2024. The Israeli military has accused Dr. Abu Safiya of being involved in “terrorist activities” and holding a position in Hamas, although they have not disclosed his whereabouts. Human rights groups have expressed growing concerns about his health, citing reports that his condition has worsened during his detention.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the Kamal Adwan Hospital was targeted because it was allegedly being used as a Hamas command center. During the raid, dozens of staff members, including Dr. Abu Safiya, were taken to an interrogation center.
Human rights organizations such as the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor have raised alarms about Dr. Abu Safiya’s welfare, with reports that his health has deteriorated, reported The Sky News. Physicians for Human Rights – Israel has requested information and a lawyer’s visit on behalf of his family. Sky News reported that patients at the hospital were forced outside in cold weather during the raid and were told to strip.
The confirmation of Dr. Abu Safiya’s detention comes as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 30 people, including children, in Gaza overnight. The Israeli military claimed the strikes targeted Hamas gathering points and command centers.
A recent United Nations report stated that Gaza’s health system is on the brink of collapse due to continuous Israeli attacks on hospitals. At least 10 hospitals have been hit since the war began, with Kamal Adwan Hospital suffering multiple strikes over the past three months.
The Israel-Hamas conflict began after a Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and led to the abduction of about 250. Israel’s retaliation has resulted in the deaths of over 45,500 Palestinians, including many women and children. The Israeli military claims it has killed 17,000 militants, though it has not provided evidence to support this.
