The journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, who went missing from Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur on 1 January, was found dead in a septic tank on the premises of contractor Suresh Chandrakar.
Confirming the incident, Bastar Inspector General P Sundarraj told ANI, “A journalist, Mukesh Chandrakar, was missing since January 1. The police registered a case and formed a special team to investigate. Today his body was recovered from a septic tank in the premises of contractor Suresh Chandrakar.”
The police are conducting a post-mortem and have begun questioning suspects linked to the case.
Reacting to the tragedy, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his grief, said, “The news of the murder of young and dedicated journalist Mukesh Chandrakar of Bijapur is extremely sad and heartbreaking. His demise is an irreparable loss to the world of journalism and society. We have given instructions to arrest the criminals as soon as possible and give them the harshest punishment.”
The 28-year-old was known for his fearless reporting on violence, and ran a YouTube channel called Bastar Junction. His family filed a missing complaint when he failed to return home. According to the Indian Express, police are focusing their investigation on contractor Suresh Chandrakar as the prime suspect, although his involvement remains unconfirmed.
This incident marks another devastating blow to the journalism community. In October, journalist Dilip Saini was fatally stabbed in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district, an attack that also left his colleague Shahid Khan injured. Earlier in June 2024, journalist Shivshankar Jha was murdered in Bihar.
