Netflix India is starting 2025 with a bang, releasing the gripping trailer for its first series of the year, Black Warrant. Premiering on 10 January, this prison drama takes viewers deep into the notorious Tihar Jail, as seen through the eyes of rookie jailer Sunil Gupta. Led by Zahan Kapoor, the ensemble cast includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, Sidhant Gupta, with special appearances by Rajshri Deshpande, Tota Roy Chaudhary, and Rajendra Gupta.
The story plunges into the harsh realities of Tihar, where power and politics dominate, and survival comes at a steep cost. Sunil Gupta, alongside two trusted fellow officers, navigates a system fraught with challenges as they encounter hardened inmates and entrenched corruption. Through personal stories and complex relationships, the series explores whether these jailers can confront the system or be changed by it.
Showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane described the series as a unique lens into a hidden world. “Black Warrant has offered us the opportunity to explore a world that’s often hidden from view—one that’s tough, complicated, and full of contradictions. The series is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, alongside Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair. Black Warrant is inspired by the book of a same name Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, written by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury. The series is presented by Applause Entertainment in collaboration with Andolan Productions and Confluence Media.
