In a delightful turn of events for fans of Sanrio’s iconic characters, “My Melody & Kuromi” is set to debut as a charming stop-motion animation series this July. The series, which marks a significant milestone with the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, promises to whisk viewers away to the whimsical world of Mariland. A special sneak peek offers a glimpse of the characters in their adorable stop-motion form, making it hard not to want to reach out and touch them.
My Melody, a straightforward and cheerful character who adores baking cookies with her mother and caring for her younger brother, has been beloved by fans since her debut in 1975. Kuromi, who entered the scene in 2005 as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival, may seem mischievous but has a softer, feminine side that has endeared her to many. Her popularity is undeniable, having secured a Top 3 spot in the 2024 Sanrio character ranking.
The series is directed by Tomoki Misato, celebrated for his innovative storytelling in “Pui Pui Molcar.” Misato expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “I’m thrilled that this project is finally announced in this important year marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi! This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion. I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”
The series, produced by Toruku as part of WIT Studio, also boasts a script by award-winning playwright Shuko Nemoto. Nemoto shared her experience of writing during the pandemic and the deep connection she feels to the characters. “Having My Melody and Kuromi speak lines I wrote felt like a reward for me as a writer,” she reflected. “Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with Director Misato or the producers in person. But we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together. The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
Fans were thrilled to receive messages from the beloved characters themselves. My Melody shared, “Our animation with Kuromi-chan is starting this summer! ♡ I want to bring lots of excitement to all my friends.♪ Please look forward to it. ♡” Kuromi added her excitement, “A new anime with My Melody and me is starting!
