The 18th Asian Film Awards nomination announcement, following this year’s theme “Empowering Ideas Together,” set the stage for a spectacular celebration of Asian cinema. With a key visual inspired by mountain peaks symbolizing filmmakers’ relentless pursuit of excellence, the Awards Ceremony promises to elevate Asian cinema to new heights. The event will take place on March 16 at the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Among the 30 outstanding films from 25 countries competing across 16 awards, South Korea’s “Exhuma” leads with 11 nominations. Directed by JANG Jae-hyun, the film combines feng shui and traditional shamanism, featuring legendary actor CHOI Min-sik. “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” from Hong Kong, with nine nominations, portrays the ungoverned Kowloon Walled City of the 1980s. Directed by YOSHIDA Daihachi, Japan’s “Teki Cometh” captures the struggles of a retired professor, earning six nominations.

The co-production “All We Imagine As Light” by Indian filmmaker Payal KAPADIA, who won the Cannes Grand Prix, also received six nominations. Hong Kong films “Papa” and “The Last Dance” garnered three nominations each, with notable performances by Sean LAU and Michael HUI. “All Shall Be Well” features Maggie LI Lin Lin, earning her first film award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Dr. Wilfred WONG, Chairman of the Asian Film Awards Academy, expressed excitement: “Over the past year, AFAA has organised events such as the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation and Asian Cinerama, bringing the charm of Hong Kong and Asian cinema to various countries and regions while fostering stronger connections among filmmakers worldwide. This year, the 18th Asian Film Awards aims to continue celebrating the outstanding achievements of Asian cinema and creating new opportunities for filmmakers. We sincerely invite everyone to join us on March 16 at the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District.”

Mr. Park Kwang-Soo, Chairman of the Busan International Film Festival, added, “The Asian Film Awards plays a vital role in fostering the development of Asian cinema and recognising its achievements. I am confident this year’s ceremony will inspire further growth and creativity in the industry.” Mr. Hiroyasu Ando, Chairman of the Tokyo International Film Festival, commented, “Asian cinema has become a global hub of creativity. The Asian Film Awards honor outstanding talent and pave the way for the future of the industry.”

Sammo HUNG, this year’s Jury President, shared his enthusiasm: “It is my pleasure to serve as the Jury President for the Asian Film Awards. It is a significant responsibility, and I hope to continue working with my peers to support the development of the Asian film industry.” HUNG encouraged young filmmakers to embrace challenges, saying, “I’m so excited to be this year’s Jury President and to have the chance to meet all the cinephiles. Hong Kong cinema has worldwide acclaim! The Asian Film Awards are such a great opportunity to bring filmmakers across Asia together and celebrate the amazing history of Asian cinema.”

Dean FUJIOKA, the Ambassador, alongside Youth Ambassadors Aokbab Chutimon, Austin LIN, LO Chun Yip, and Masaki OKADA, will represent diverse regions of Asia. FUJIOKA expressed his excitement, saying, “I look forward to collaborating with the Youth Ambassadors to promote Asian cinema.” Chutimon shared her enthusiasm, LIN highlighted the Awards as a valuable platform, and OKADA anticipated celebrating this year’s winners.
