Netflix India is set to bring back one of its most acclaimed whodunit thrillers, “Raat Akeli Hai.” Peepingmoon.com exclusively revealed that the streaming platform is developing a sequel to the 2020 murder mystery starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Nawazuddin will return as the enigmatic small-town inspector Jatil Yadav, while Chitrangda Singh joins the cast as the female lead. Although plot details remain tightly under wraps, it’s expected that the sequel will follow Jatil Yadav as he delves into another complex, high-profile case.
This marks a significant collaboration between Nawazuddin and Chitrangda, who were initially slated to work together on Kushan Nandi’s 2017 film “Babumoshai Bandookbaaz.” However, Chitrangda exited that project due to discomfort with certain scenes. The two have now resolved their differences and are eager to collaborate on this gripping murder mystery.
Honey Trehn, who directed the first film, returns to helm the sequel, working from a script by Smita Singh Khan, the writer behind the original story. Trehn will also produce under his and Abhishek Chaubey’s Macguffin Pictures, in partnership with Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies. Currently in pre-production, the film is set to begin shooting next month and aims for a late 2025 release.
The original “Raat Akeli Hai” focused on a small-town police officer unraveling the murder of a politician, a case complicated by the victim’s secretive family and the inspector’s internal conflicts. The film, which also starred Radhika Apte and Shweta Tripathi.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui will begin shooting for “Raat Akeli Hai 2” after wrapping up Maddock Films’ “Thama,” where he plays an antagonist opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna in a horror comedy. The “Sacred Games” actor has a busy lineup ahead, with upcoming projects including romantic comedies “Bole Chudiyaan” and “Noorani Chehra,” and Bhavesh Mandalia’s “Lion King.”
Meanwhile, Chitrangda Singh will next appear in Akshay Kumar’s “Housefull 5,” slated for release on 6 June, 2025. She is also starring in Neeraj Pandey’s Netflix series, “Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.”
