Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, known for his iconic role in Amadeus and more recently The White Lotus, is set to star in Bookends, the debut feature film from 5X Media. Joining him are Caroline Aaron of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Noam Ash from The Other Two, and Charlie Barnett, recognized for his work in Russian Doll and The Acolyte. The film is directed by Mike Doyle and written by Ash, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences.
Bookends centers on Nate (played by Ash), a lively millennial novelist who finds himself back in his grandparents’ home after a tough breakup. His return to a quieter life coincides with his grandfather Saul (Abraham), a Holocaust survivor, beginning to show early signs of dementia. Nate’s grandmother Miriam (Aaron) refuses to confront Saul’s condition, adding to the complexities of family life. As Nate navigates this emotional terrain, he also discovers an unexpected romance with his grandparents’ doctor, portrayed by Barnett.
Described as a poignant blend of humor and heart, Bookends delves into the coming-of-age themes while addressing end-of-life issues with sensitivity and depth. Producers Scott Einbinder and Alon Shtruzman of 5X Media highlight the film’s unique appeal. “Bookends is a coming-of-age story deftly blended with complex end-of-life issues. It has a rare combination of humor and heart that cuts across generational lines in a deeply profound way,” they said, expressing their excitement for the company’s debut feature.
Director Mike Doyle emphasizes the film’s emotional resonance. “The film celebrates the beautiful messiness of life, the resilience of the human spirit, and the unbreakable bonds that tie us to those we love across generations,” Doyle shared. “A story that will make us laugh, cry, and cherish the wonderful, unpredictable journey of family and love.”
Bookends is produced by Henry Russell Bergstein, Warren Ostergard, and Noam Ash, alongside Einbinder and Shtruzman. The film represents 5X Media’s first feature, signaling a significant step for the Los Angeles and Madrid-based production company.
F. Murray Abraham is represented by Innovative Artists, Caroline Aaron by Innovative Artists and Vanguard Management Group, Noam Ash by Buchwald, Charlie Barnett by Gersh and Artists First, and Mike Doyle by Gersh.
