The transformation of Jean Valjean, the beloved protagonist from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, is being reimagined for the silver screen by acclaimed French director Éric Besnard, according to Variety exclusive report. Known for his period pieces, Besnard has commenced filming in the scenic landscapes of Southern France as of 14 January. The film Valjean is a fresh take on the character’s journey from a hardened convict to a man of compassion and moral strength.
Gregory Gadebois, who previously collaborated with Besnard on Louise Violet, takes on the titular role. His portrayal of Valjean is expected to be both powerful and nuanced, as he steps into the shoes of one of literature’s most complex characters. Joining Gadebois are Bernard Campan, Isabelle Carré, and Alexandra Lamy, each bringing their unique talents to this ambitious project.
Produced by Clément Miserez and Matthieu Warter under Mediawan’s Radar Films banner, the film has secured local distribution through Warner Bros. France, with France 3 Cinéma co-producing. The project also enjoys backing from Ciné+, OCS, HBO Max, Entourage, and Cinécap.
According to the report, the narrative focuses on Valjean’s pivotal encounter with a compassionate bishop, portrayed as the cornerstone of his moral awakening. Sabine Chemaly of Ginger & Fed describes the film as one that highlights Valjean’s “metamorphosis” from bitterness to redemption. “This act of kindness by the bishop is a turning point for Jean Valjean, as it shows him that there is still good in the world. He begins to question his own choices and starts to see that there is another path for him,” Chemaly explains. The film will delve deep into Valjean’s psyche, showcasing the transformative power of empathy and second chances.
With the budget of €7 million, Valjean promises visually stunning exteriors, staying true to Besnard’s signature style, where nature plays a significant role. Radar Films, known for successful productions like the Belle et Sebastien franchise, aims to replicate this success with Valjean.
