Fox has officially renewed Murder in a Small Town for a second season, bringing back the crime drama featuring Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk. The series is being produced in Canada by Sepia Films alongside Fox Entertainment and Future Shack Entertainment.
The story is adapted from the Edgar Award-winning Karl Alberg novels and four to five books have been taken into the first season. The upcoming season will be more intrigue as the remaining novels unfold in the upcoming episodes.
Brooke Bowman, EVP of Drama Programming & Development at Fox Television Network, expressed enthusiasm for the continuation of the series: “We look forward to giving fans a second season of Karl Alberg’s unmatched expertise as a crime solver in Murder in a Small Town. We’ve enjoyed a terrific partnership with Sepia and Future Shack and our incredibly talented cast and crew and can’t wait to see what’s in store for our characters next season.”
The series has proven to be a strategic asset for Fox, fitting into the network’s cost-effective international content model. With production costs reportedly under $1 million per episode, Murder in a Small Town delivers both financial efficiency and audience engagement. Its popularity is evident, ranking among the Top 3 Fox shows on Hulu this season, with the pilot episode amassing 11 million views across platforms.
Jeff Wachtel, CEO of Future Shack Entertainment, echoed the sentiment, celebrating the show’s renewal. “We couldn’t be more excited about our continued relationship with our terrific partners at Fox and Sepia. In addition to the validation as a creative and popular success, getting a second season pickup confirms that Future Shack’s international model can create high-quality and cost-effective series.”
Set against the scenic backdrop of a quiet coastal town, the show follows Karl Alberg, portrayed by Sutherland, as he navigates the seemingly serene community that harbors dark secrets. The story, enriched by its ties to Sutherland’s late father Donald, continues to captivate viewers with its blend of mystery and drama.
Produced in British Columbia, Murder in a Small Town benefits from a talented team, with Ian Weir serving as head writer and executive producer. Other executive producers include Nick Orchard, Morris Ruskin, Sharon Wisnia, and Jon Cotton.
