Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi’s debut feature film Baksho Bondi (Shadowbox) is set to make its world premiere at the prestigious 75th Berlin International Film Festival, as announced by the festival organisers on Tuesday.
Selected to compete in the newly launched Perspectives category, Baksho Bondi will stand alongside other exceptional debut fiction features from around the globe. According to Berlinale’s synopsis, the film follows Maya, played by Tillotama Shome, as she discovers her husband, an ex-soldier suffering from PTSD, is the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Faced with mounting challenges, Maya and her teenage son must go to extraordinary lengths to keep their family intact.
The cast includes Chandan Bisht, Sayan Karmakar, and Suman Saha. A joint production between India, France, the US, and Spain, Baksho Bondi will compete in the Perspectives section against an impressive lineup of international films.
The Berlin International Film Festival, the world’s largest public film festival, will run from 12-23 February. This year’s event will showcase works by both renowned filmmakers and emerging talents, with the full lineup unveiled today.
In addition to Baksho Bondi, the Perspectives section features films such as The Settlement by Mohamed Rashad, BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions by Kahlil Joseph, and Where the Night Stands Still by Liryc Dela Cruz, among others. Competing films also include The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box) by Ernesto Martínez Bucio, Two Times João Liberada by Paula Tomás Marques, and Mad Bills to Pay (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo) by Joel Alfonso Vargas.
Notable entries in the main competition include Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, a period drama on the final days of Lorenz Hart, and Hong Sang-soo’s intimate drama What Does That Nature Say to You? This year’s gala section will feature world premieres of films like Bong Joon-Ho’s Mickey 17 and Tom Tykwer’s Das Licht, which will open the festival.
Todd Haynes, whose debut feature Poison won the Teddy Award in Berlin in 1991, will preside over the international jury. Meanwhile, actress Tilda Swinton will receive the Honourary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement, celebrating her long-standing association with the festival, where she has showcased 26 films over the years.
