Multiple award-winning Indian director Hansal Mehta, known for acclaimed projects like “Scam 1992” and “Shahid,” is stepping into the production arena with the launch of True Story Films, according to Variety exclusive. Partnering with producer Sahil Saigal, the venture is backed by industry stalwarts Vinod Bhanushali and Parag Sanghvi, signaling a significant expansion of Mehta’s creative influence.
True Story Films is kicking off with an ambitious slate valued at approximately INR5 billion ($58 million). The company aims to produce a diverse range of theatrical features and streaming content, spanning genres from hard-hitting dramas to light-hearted comedies.
Mehta, who will serve as the creative head, expressed his vision, told Variety, “True Story Films is more than just a production company for me – it’s the realization of a dream to create compelling personal stories and to work with diverse storytellers. I am driven by narratives that challenge the status quo, provoke conversations, challenge cinematic conventions and entertain at the deepest level.”
Sahil Saigal, who produced Mehta’s recent works “Faraaz” and “The Buckingham Murders,” will oversee business operations. The launch marks Mehta’s first formal entry into production, building on his reputation as one of India’s most critically acclaimed filmmakers.
Vinod Bhanushali, head of Bhanushali Studios Ltd., highlighted the strategic nature of the partnership, said, “As a producer, my passion lies in telling compelling stories that resonate with audiences. Partnering with a creative genius like Hansal Mehta is a natural step forward.”
The production company plans to commence its inaugural slate in 2025, with initial releases expected in early 2026. The projects will cater to both theatrical audiences and streaming platforms, emphasizing the discovery of fresh voices alongside established talent.
Parag Sanghvi noted the challenges of the digital landscape, said, “The digital space is highly competitive and challenging when it comes to creating and delivering impactful content, and what Hansal has achieved so far is truly commendable in both scale and quality.”
