Indian actor Kani Kusruti has been honored with IMDb’s prestigious “Breakout Star” STARmeter Award, cementing her position as a rising force in global cinema. The accolade, based on IMDb’s monthly traffic of over 250 million visitors, reflects Kusruti’s surging popularity and ascent on the platform’s Popular Indian Celebrities chart, a reliable predictor of talent poised for international success.
Kusruti’s meteoric rise follows her standout performance in Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, where she delivers a compelling portrayal of Prabha, a Malayali nurse navigating life in Mumbai. The film created history at Cannes 2024, earning the Grand Prix and becoming the first Indian entry in the main competition in three decades. The film’s global recognition continues, with two Golden Globe nominations and an IMDb user rating of 7.2/10 solidifying its critical acclaim.
Kusruti’s trajectory also includes a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards for her supporting role in Girls Will Be Girls, which won big at Sundance. With the ceremony set for February, All We Imagine as Light is also in contention for Best International Feature, further fueling awards season buzz around the actor.
Reacting to her IMDb honor, Kusruti said, “I’m really happy and touched to receive the IMDb ‘Breakout Star’ STARmeter Award. I don’t always have such confidence, so once in a while, when you get this kind of validation, you feel like you’re doing something right.”
Known for her diverse roles in films like Kerala Cafe, Biriyaani, and OK Computer, Kusruti now joins the ranks of past STARmeter “Breakout Star” recipients, including Sharvari, Adarsh Gourav, and Regé-Jean Page. With her impressive body of work and international recognition, Kani Kusruti is undoubtedly a name to watch in the global cinematic landscape.
