The Sonic the Hedgehog film series is speeding ahead, with a fourth installment officially slated for release on 19 March, 2027. The date strategically positions the movie a week before Easter, ensuring a prime spot in the spring holiday box office race. This announcement comes as Skydance prepares to take over Paramount later this year, signaling the studio’s confidence in the blue hedgehog’s continued popularity.

The decision to greenlight another Sonic film follows the record-breaking success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which became the highest-grossing installment in the franchise. The film amassed $218.8 million domestically and $425 million worldwide, contributing to the SEGA-branded feature series’ staggering $1.1 billion global box office haul. The threequel also dominated the charts, holding the No. 1 spot domestically for two consecutive weeks and leading in over 30 international markets, including the U.K., Mexico, Italy, and Australia. Beyond ticket sales, the film drove over $180 million in global consumer spending on home entertainment rentals and purchases.

While details about the fourth installment remain under wraps, including director and cast confirmations, Jeff Fowler, who helmed the first three films, could potentially return. The franchise’s ensemble cast has included Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in key roles.

The March 2027 release places Sonic in competition with an untitled Universal film set for the same date and an untitled Warner Bros. Legendary Monsterverse movie scheduled for Easter weekend on 26 March. Despite the crowded slate, Sonic’s strong fanbase and proven box office track record make it a formidable contender.

Looking ahead to 2027, the year already features several high-profile releases, including Avengers: Secret Wars (7 May), Warner Bros.’ animated films Bad Fairies (23 July) and Margie Claus (5 November), and Disney’s Frozen 3 (24 November).
