Indian journalist Rana Ayyub is under investigation directed by Delhi court amid an FIR based on a complaint by advocate Amita Sachdeva, who is associated with Hindu right-wing groups. The complaint alleges that Ayyub’s social media posts “insulted Hindu deities” and “spread anti-India sentiment.”

In its 25 January order, Chief Judicial Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh stated that the allegations presented in the complaint, prima facie, constituted cognizable offences, as reported by Live Law. The court emphasized the seriousness of the accusations and deemed it necessary to order an investigation into the matter.

The court instructed the station house officer (SHO) of South Delhi’s cyber police station to register an FIR and conduct a thorough investigation. Following the directive, Delhi Police registered FIR No. 0003/2025 on January 27, under Sections 505, 295A, and 153A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Cyber Police Station, South Delhi, according to a post on X by the complainant.

The case has been scheduled for Tuesday for the submission of a compliance report.

This development comes amid growing concerns about the use of legal actions against journalists in India, with critics alleging that such measures can stifle dissent and press freedom. Ayyub, known for her investigative reporting, has frequently faced legal and social media scrutiny for her work and outspoken views.
