India’s Applause Entertainment is deepening its footprint in cinema with a new collaboration, signing a two-film deal with acclaimed filmmaker Kabir Khan. According to Deadline exclusive, the agreement comes just as Applause’s latest project, Black Warrant, secures a spot in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for non-English series.

The partnership between Applause and Kabir Khan Films will see the 83 and Ek Tha Tiger director helm and lead creative production on two upcoming films. While specific details remain under wraps, Applause Managing Director Sameer Nair emphasized the shared passion for storytelling as a driving force behind the collaboration. “At Applause, our vision is to collaborate with powerful creative voices to tell stories that are unique, distinctive, and popular,” Nair told Deadline, adding that the deal marks an exciting new phase for the company’s feature film ambitions.

Khan echoed the sentiment, highlighting the creative freedom the partnership offers. “This collaboration with Applause is a natural fit as we both share a passion for stories that resonate with people at their core,” he said. Khan, whose filmography includes Bajrangi Bhaijaan, New York, and last year’s Chandu Champion, has consistently delivered high-impact narratives across genres, making his next move with Applause a highly anticipated one.

The deal aligns with Applause’s broader strategy to build a robust film slate while continuing its success in streaming. Primarily known for its acclaimed TV and digital series, the Aditya Birla Group-backed company is increasing its focus on feature films. Black Warrant, which premiered on January 10, has given Applause a strong start to 2025, with Nair confirming to Deadline that the series has received an overwhelmingly positive response. Based on the book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury, the series explores Gupta’s early years as a jailer at Delhi’s Tihar Prisons. Nair described it as “a piece of contemporary history” and noted that the show’s expansive timeline—from the 1980s through the 2000s—offers plenty of material for future seasons.

Developed through Applause’s signature model of acquiring IP, financing development, and producing content before securing a platform partner, Black Warrant landed on Netflix after years of groundwork. While industry concerns about tightening budgets in India’s streaming market persist, Applause remains focused on producing content that balances mass appeal with strong storytelling. “The Indian market is changing, like the rest of the world,” Nair told Deadline, acknowledging that the era of ultra-premium, high-budget productions is waning. However, he maintained that Applause has always taken a measured approach, ensuring sustainability while delivering compelling narratives.
