The long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially in motion, with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in final talks to reprise their beloved roles. The cult classic’s original stars are also set to executive produce, bringing fresh life to the story that first captured audiences in 1997.
Tim Federle, best known for Better Nate Than Never and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is attached to direct, with production eyeing a June start date, likely in Los Angeles. The project gained momentum late last year when Sorvino teased in an interview with People that a director was in place and both she and Kudrow were fully on board. Kudrow later confirmed in January that a “really good” script had been written.
The screenplay comes from Robin Schiff, the creative force behind the original film, who recently gained renewed industry buzz as an executive producer and showrunner for Emily in Paris. Returning producer Laurence Mark, alongside Newhart creator Barry Kemp, will also help steer the sequel.
The 1997 film followed Romy and Michele, two quirky best friends who, feeling unaccomplished as they near 30, fabricate high-profile careers to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. The movie became a fan favorite, celebrated for its fashion, humor, and a soundtrack that still sparks nostalgia.
Sorvino, fresh off her roles in Shining Vale and Impeachment: American Crime Story, continues to stay in the spotlight, while Kudrow recently starred alongside Ray Romano in Netflix’s No Good Deed, released in December.
