The Scream franchise is set to take another unpredictable turn with a shocking casting reveal. Fresh off the announcement that Scream 3 star Scott Foley has joined Scream 7, longtime fans have been hit with even bigger news—Matthew Lillard is officially back.
Lillard, known for his role as the original Ghostface killer Stu Macher in Wes Craven’s 1996 classic, has never been shy about his desire to return to the franchise. Over the years, he has teased the possibility that Stu might still be alive. Now, his cryptic Instagram post has reignited fan theories, leaving many wondering whether Scream 7 will confirm what Lillard has hinted at for years.
Stu’s apparent demise in Scream was as brutal as it was final—or so it seemed. After multiple stab wounds and a television set to the head, the character was believed to be dead. Likewise, Foley’s Scream 3 character, Roman Bridger, didn’t make it out alive. With both actors returning, speculation is running wild. Are they reprising their original roles? Playing brand-new characters? Or is the franchise taking a New Nightmare-style meta approach, where actors play fictionalized versions of themselves?
Adding to the intrigue, Scream 7 will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are also back, while an impressive roster of newcomers is set to join the bloodbath, including Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Asa Germann (The Boys), Anna Camp (Hysteria!), Isabel May (1883), Mark Consuelos, and Joel McHale, who will play Sidney’s husband, Mark Evans.
With original Scream writer Kevin Williamson directing, the seventh installment is slated for release on February 27, 2026. The return of franchise veterans and a stacked ensemble cast suggest that Scream 7 is gearing up for something truly unexpected.
