Khaby Lame, the world’s most followed TikToker, has been named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, using his global platform to advocate for children’s rights. The announcement came during his visit to Senegal, where he met young people working to transform their communities.
Lame, known for his silent comedic videos dismantling absurd life hacks, has amassed 162.4 million followers on TikTok, surpassing Charli D’Amelio and MrBeast. But his road to success wasn’t easy. Born in Senegal, he moved to Italy as a child and faced significant struggles, from growing up in a social housing complex to dealing with dyslexia and dyscalculia in school. His life took another hit when he lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then that he turned to TikTok—an act that would change his life forever.
“From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity,” said Lame. “It’s a true honour to be appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and be part of an organisation that puts children’s rights front and centre every day.”
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell welcomed Lame to the team, recognizing his ability to inspire millions. “His creativity and unique perspective on the world have inspired hundreds of millions of followers, and will continue to motivate others in raising their voices and telling their stories in their own unique ways,” said Russell.
During his visit to Senegal, Lame engaged with street-connected children at a shelter in Dakar, listening to their experiences and joining them in sports. He also visited an inclusive school providing assistive technology for children with disabilities, even playing a football match with blind students.
“I’ve met many young people who are standing up in their communities and making a change – be it learning technology skills, finding solutions for climate change, or empowering each other with ways to stay safe from violence,” Lame shared.
His appointment comes at a critical time for UNICEF, as the organisation continues its work to improve opportunities for vulnerable children. As a Goodwill Ambassador, Lame joins an esteemed group of global figures, including David Beckham, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Katy Perry, and Lionel Messi, who use their influence to advocate for children worldwide.
From a small-town upbringing in Italy to the heights of digital fame, Lame’s journey is a testament to resilience. Now, with UNICEF, he’s using his voice—without saying a word—to create meaningful change.
