Actress Natalie Portman is set to dive into the complexities of modern romance as she takes on the lead role in Good Sex, an upcoming rom-com written and directed by Lena Dunham. While the film’s release date remains under wraps, it joins a growing trend of movies tackling age-gap relationships, much like Nicole Kidman’s recent Babygirl.

In Good Sex, Portman will portray Ally, a highly successful couples’ therapist approaching 40 and navigating life after the end of a decade-long relationship. Encouraged by her best friend to embrace the New York City dating scene, Ally soon finds herself caught between two very different love interests. As per the film’s synopsis shared via Deadline, she “finds her life pulled in opposing directions as she falls into a steamy fling with a 20-something Brooklyn hipster just as she begins a promising, more conventional relationship with Alan, a successful 50-something in Manhattan.” The storyline further teases an emotional rollercoaster for Ally, as “a romantic crossroads blossoms into a full-blown identity crisis”, forcing her to juggle the two relationships while making sense of her own conflicting desires “before she risks losing them both.”

Portman is also producing the film alongside Sophie Mas under their company, MountainA, with Dunham and Michael Cohen backing the project through their studio, Good Thing Going.

Beyond Good Sex, Portman has another intriguing project on the horizon. She is set to appear in The Gallerist, a film directed by Cathy Yan, where she will be part of a star-studded ensemble that includes Jenna Ortega, Charli XCX, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Daniel Brühl, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The movie follows a desperate gallerist who hatches a bizarre plan to sell a dead body at Art Basel Miami. Currently in pre-production, filming is expected to begin later this year.

Portman has played a wide array of roles throughout her career, from critically acclaimed performances in Closer, Black Swan, and Jackie, earning three Oscar nominations along the way. However, she recently revealed one of her most cherished roles was voicing a character in the beloved animated series Bluey. Reflecting on her experience in the episode Whale Watching, she said, “I was a narrator of a nature documentary that they were watching. It’s a very important show for my family and I was really, really honoured to get to be part of it.”
