The Producers Guild of America (PGA) hosted its 36th annual awards ceremony on Saturday night at The Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, celebrating the best in film and television production. The night’s biggest win went to Anora, which took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, further cementing its status as a top Oscar contender.
The indie comedy, which previously won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, has had a triumphant weekend, securing the Critics Choice Award for Best Picture on Friday and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award earlier on Saturday.
Director Sean Baker praised his fellow producers, Alex Coco and Samantha Quan, for their dedication and problem-solving skills, said, “I saw them shine as producers,” he said. “I saw them make miracles day by day. They never said no to me. They worked it out.”
The PGA’s top prize has long been a key predictor for the Academy Awards, aligning with the Oscar winner for Best Picture in 16 of the last 21 years. Last year, Oppenheimer took both honors, and with Anora already securing six Oscar nominations, its PGA win signals strong prospects for Hollywood’s biggest night.
On the television side, Shōgun (FX) continued its dominant run, securing the award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Drama, while HBO | Max’s Hacks and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer triumphed in the Comedy and Limited Series categories, respectively. These wins follow their recent successes at the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards.
NBC’s Saturday Night Live took home the award for Live Entertainment, Variety, Sketch, Standup & Talk Television, just a week before celebrating its 50th season on the air.
DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot claimed the Animated Motion Picture prize, while Max’s Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story won Outstanding Documentary. Among this year’s honorary award recipients were Dana Walden (Milestone Award), Taika Waititi (Norman Lear Achievement Award), Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein (posthumously honored with the Trailblazer Award), and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri (David O. Selznick Achievement Award).
Earlier in the week, Netflix’s Simone Biles Rising won Outstanding Sports Program, while Max’s Sesame Street secured its third consecutive win in the Children’s Program category. FX’s Shōgun: The Making of Shōgun was recognized for Outstanding Short Form Program, and Cosm Studios’ Orbital received the PGA Innovation Award.
PGA directors Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line opened the night with a passionate call to bring more productions back to Los Angeles. “Studios, streamers and financiers…please help bring production back to LA. The movie business made Los Angeles, and now it’s time for Los Angeles to make movies again,” De Line urged.
