Prime Video is set to take viewers deeper into Middle-earth as it officially confirms a third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The globally acclaimed series is now in pre-production and will begin filming this spring at its new production hub, Shepperton Studios in the UK.

The upcoming season will see the return of seasoned directors Charlotte Brändström and Sanaa Hamri, while welcoming Stefan Schwartz to the series for the first time. Brändström, who played a crucial role in shaping the series’ visual storytelling in the previous seasons, steps into an executive producer role while continuing as a director. Hamri, known for her work on The Wheel of Time and Empire, also returns, bringing her expertise to multiple episodes. Schwartz, whose diverse portfolio includes The Boys, The Walking Dead, and Luther, joins the creative force steering the epic saga forward.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and we’re thrilled that a third season is underway. The creative team has an extraordinary vision of what’s to come with stories that have left us enchanted and enthralled,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “We look forward to continuing this epic journey, for our global customers, delving even deeper into the legendary tales that shaped Middle-earth.”

Since its premiere, The Rings of Power has drawn over 170 million viewers worldwide, cementing itself as one of Prime Video’s most significant success stories. With Seasons One and Two receiving critical acclaim and Certified Fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has become a cornerstone of Amazon’s original programming. The first season remains Prime Video’s biggest TV premiere to date, while the second became the most-watched returning season by total hours viewed.

Behind the scenes, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay continue to lead the project alongside executive producers Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell, and Charlotte Brändström. Additional production team members include producer Matthew Penry-Davey and co-producers Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee.

Brändström, a distinguished director with credits across multiple high-profile series, including Shōgun, The Witcher, and The Man in the High Castle, brings extensive experience to the production. Hamri, a Moroccan-born director with a strong foothold in television, music videos, and film, continues her collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios through an overall deal. Schwartz, known for his sharp storytelling in critically acclaimed series, rounds out the trio of directors shaping Season 3’s narrative.

With anticipation building and production set to commence soon, The Rings of Power is poised to continue its epic retelling of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary universe, promising more grandeur, depth, and storytelling magic for fans worldwide.
