Nina Hoss and filmmaker Ina Weisse have reunited for Cicadas, their second collaboration following 2019’s The Audition. The drama, which just premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama competition, delves into the complexities of family, identity, and the fragile nature of control.
Hoss stars as Isabell, a woman whose life is upended when she realizes her aging parents can no longer live independently. Struggling to find care for them while managing a strained marriage with Philippe, played by Vincent Macaigne, she frequently travels between Berlin and her parents’ weekend home—a modernist house built by her father in his prime. Amid this upheaval, Isabell repeatedly crosses paths with Anja (Saskia Rosendahl), a single mother barely making ends meet. As Anja and her young daughter, Greta, become intertwined in Isabell’s world, an unexpected connection forms. But as the boundaries of her reality begin to blur, Isabell starts to question everything she once believed about her life.

Alongside Hoss, the cast includes Saskia Rosendahl, Vincent Macaigne, Thorsten Merten, Klaus Pohl, Uwe Preuss, Bettina Lamprecht, and Florian Geisselmann. Cicadas is produced by Felix von Boehm and Katrin Jochimsen, with Hoss serving as an executive producer.
Beta Cinema is handling world sales, while DCM will distribute the film in Germany. As Cicadas makes its debut on the international stage, the film promises a deeply introspective journey, driven by the powerhouse collaboration of Hoss and Weisse.
