Just hours after Anora won the Best Picture Oscar in a five-win sweep, Hollywood experienced a magnitude-3.9 earthquake rattled Los Angeles at 10:13 p.m. PT on Sunday, sending tremors through the region only three hours after the final Academy Award was handed out.
The epicenter was recorded 1.4 miles east-southeast of North Hollywood, placing it close to Universal City and Studio City. The temblor struck at a depth of 9.5 miles, with shaking felt from Santa Monica to Los Feliz. However, in the immediate aftermath, no injuries or damage were reported.
Despite the quake’s proximity to the Dolby Theatre, where the Oscars had just wrapped up, the event seemed to go unnoticed at the many post-award celebrations. Deadline staffers attending parties across town reported that they didn’t feel the tremor.
Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart confirmed that no emergency units were deployed across the city to inspect for infrastructure damage. “After a temblor, LAFD usually deploys a strategic survey by land, air, and sea of all districts around the city,” Stewart said. However, given the minor nature of the quake, officials saw no immediate need for such measures.
By 10:45 p.m. PT, the U.S. Geological Survey had yet to record any aftershocks.
