Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan returns to the global stage with his latest feature, Homebound, officially selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, running from 13 to 24 May. The film marks a significant collaboration with Dharma Productions, one of India’s leading production houses known for backing both commercial and critically acclaimed cinema, further underscoring the evolving landscape of Indian storytelling on the international front.
Known for spotlighting distinctive voices and bold storytelling, the Un Certain Regard section is a fitting home for Ghaywan’s latest work—an intimate and layered exploration of identity, memory, and reconciliation.
With Homebound, Ghaywan returns to Cannes with a new narrative that promises to be equally compelling. While detailed plot elements remain undisclosed, the film is expected to delve into themes of identity, family, and emotional reckoning — hallmarks of Ghaywan’s storytelling style. Its selection reinforces not only his reputation as one of India’s most respected contemporary filmmakers but also Dharma Productions’ commitment to nurturing bold, thought-provoking cinema beyond the mainstream.
Producer Karan Johar shared the news on Instagram,
Ghaywan made his Cannes debut with his critically acclaimed 2015 directorial debut Masaan, a poignant drama set along the ghats of Varanasi. Starring Richa Chadha, Vicky Kaushal (in his breakout role), and Shweta Tripathi, Masaan captivated international audiences with its sensitive portrayal of loss, caste, and societal pressure. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Prix de l’Avenir (Promising Future Award), marking a major moment for Indian independent cinema on the global stage.
With Homebound, Ghaywan and Dharma join forces to present a story that is both rooted in cultural specificity and universally resonant. The film’s Cannes premiere is set to be a highlight of the festival as international audiences await another moving exploration of human connection from the director who brought us Masaan.
