In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cinema and global cultural recognition, Yash Raj Films’ historic blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) has become the first-ever Indian film to be immortalized with a statue in London’s Leicester Square.

Recently announced by the Heart of London Business Alliance, the statue will join the celebrated ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail — a permanent installation that pays tribute to iconic characters and moments from film history. The announcement also kicks off the 30-year anniversary celebrations of DDLJ, the multi-award-winning romantic comedy that has become a beloved cornerstone of Bollywood and one of the longest-running films in Indian cinema history.

The bronze statue will feature Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in one of the film’s most iconic poses, forever capturing the essence of the timeless love story that defined a generation. The statue is set to be unveiled in Spring 2025 and will be positioned along the eastern terrace of Leicester Square, outside the Odeon Cinema—a venue that has hosted countless Indian film premieres over the decades.

This honour is particularly meaningful to the over five million-strong British South Asian community, for whom DDLJ holds deep cultural and emotional significance. Its placement in Leicester Square marks a powerful recognition of the global impact of Indian cinema and storytelling.

With this statue, DDLJ now stands proudly among ten other cinematic legends including Harry Potter, Laurel & Hardy, Mary Poppins, Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain, Paddington, Mr. Bean, Bugs Bunny, and DC’s Batman and Wonder Woman—a true testament to the film’s cross-cultural influence and enduring popularity.

Directed by Aditya Chopra in his debut, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has become more than just a film—it’s a generational touchstone, a celebration of love, and now, a permanent part of London’s cinematic landscape.
