Oscar and Emmy-winning actress Kate Winslet has exited the upcoming Hulu drama series The Spot, Deadline has reported exclusively. Winslet had been attached to the high-profile project as both star and executive producer, teaming with creator Ed Solomon and independent powerhouse A24.
The project, which landed at Hulu last August following a heated bidding war, was given a straight-to-series order with Winslet set to play the lead — a successful surgeon entangled in a psychological and moral unraveling. But sources now confirm that Winslet has stepped away from the series due to creative differences, tied at least in part to how the character’s trajectory has shifted during the development process.
While no official statement has been made, the departure is described as amicable. Conversations are already underway with other A-list actresses, and insiders say production is still targeting a 2026 start date, once the role is recast.
This is not the first time Hulu has had to recast a lead on a major prestige project. In 2021, Kate McKinnon exited The Dropout, despite being initially attached as both lead and executive producer. Her replacement, Amanda Seyfried, went on to win an Emmy for her performance as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. More recently, Margaret Qualley was replaced by Grace Van Patten in the forthcoming Amanda Knox limited series after a last-minute change.
Created, written, and showrun by Ed Solomon, The Spot tells the story of a high-performing surgeon and her schoolteacher husband, whose lives begin to unravel after they suspect she may be involved in a child’s hit-and-run accident. As they dig deeper, dark truths surface, testing their relationship and leading them into a murky terrain of betrayal, guilt, and buried secrets.A24 is developing the project and will serve as lead studio, co-producing the series alongside 20th Television, Hulu’s Disney sibling.
