Michael Madsen, the gravel-voiced actor who brought brooding menace and unexpected depth to roles in Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and The Hateful Eight, died Thursday morning at his Malibu home. He was 67.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed he was found unresponsive following a 911 call. His publicist, Liz Rodriguez, said Madsen had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Madsen became a cult icon through his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino in films like Reservoir Dogs (1992), where he played Mr. Blonde. In Kill Bill, he played the weary assassin Budd; in The Hateful Eight, a cowboy with hidden motives.

“Quentin is, in my estimation, the best director of my generation. Because of my relationship with him, it became bigger than anything I ever did. But if you’re an actor, you want to act, you want to try different stuff,” Madsen once said.

Born in Chicago on 25th September 1957, he was the son of a firefighter father and a mother who became an Emmy-winning filmmaker. He began acting with Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, learning under John Malkovich, before moving to Los Angeles—working as a gas station mechanic before landing his first screen roles in the early 1980s.

His film credits spanned over 300 roles, including WarGames, Thelma & Louise, Donnie Brasco, Species, Sin City, and Die Another Day. But his trademark was characters that blended danger with a quiet, lived-in humanity.

“Fame is a two-edged sword,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. “I think I’ve been more believable than I should have been. I think people really fear me… But I’m not that guy. I’m just an actor. I’m a father, I’ve got seven children.”

Madsen was also a poet and photographer. His upcoming book, Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems, features a foreword by Tarantino, who writes, “For me, the real journey that Michael the writer is exploring is what it means to be a man in a world where the notions of manhood that some of us grew up with are barely remembered.”

Madsen’s personal life carried tragedy. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022. He is survived by his wife, DeAnna, whom he married in 1996; sons Christian, Max, Kal, and Luke; his mother Elaine; and sisters Virginia and Cheryl.
