After years of contemplation, revisions, and quiet determination, Aamir Khan is finally bringing his dream project to life. According to reports, the actor confirmed that production on his long-envisioned adaptation of the Mahabharat will begin this August, marking what he has often described as his most significant and possibly final cinematic journey.

Speaking to Screen, Khan said, “Well, I’m starting work on it in the month of August. It will be a series of films. It’ll be back to back. Because you can’t tell the Mahabharat in just one film. And you know, the Mahabharat is very dangerous. It’s again a story which is in my blood. No one can do anything about it. I need to tell it. So I’m starting work on it.”

Khan’s attachment to the Mahabharat goes beyond creative ambition — he has long spoken of it as a calling. The actor and filmmaker previously admitted that he delayed the project to ensure it was handled with “the utmost care and depth,” fully aware of the cultural and emotional weight the epic carries. “A single misstep,” he noted in past interviews, “could hurt sentiments.”

Back in April and May, while promoting Sitaare Zameen Par, Khan had hinted that the Mahabharat would be his next big leap—and possibly his last.
“Once I’ve done it, I might feel there’s nothing more I can do after that,” he had said.

Now that Sitaare Zameen Par has been released, the Mahabharat wheels are officially in motion. Khan also revealed that he will not be casting any established stars in the film(s). Instead, he intends to populate the sprawling world of the Mahabharat with new or lesser-known actors, giving the audience a fresh lens through which to experience the ancient epic.

This move underscores Khan’s commitment to storytelling over star power: a decision that could redefine the epic genre in Indian cinema.
In his words, “No one can do anything about it. I need to tell it.”

The Mahabharat will unfold as a multi-part saga, aiming to bring its complex characters, moral dilemmas, and timeless philosophies to life in a way no Indian film has attempted before.
