AMC Networks is teaming up with Tubi to finally bring Demascus to the screen, setting an exclusive premiere for Thursday, 7th August. Created by Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, the long-shelved, six-episode sci-fi comedy series will debut as a Tubi Original, marking a bold move for the free streaming platform.
At the center of the half-hour series is Okieriete Onaodowan, who stars as Demascus, a 33-year-old Black man navigating a surreal journey of self-discovery through “experimental reality-bending” technology. Janet Hubert, known for her iconic role as Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, co-stars in the series.
Joining them in the ensemble are Caleb Eberhardt, Shakira Ja’nai Paye, and Martin Lawrence, adding both dramatic and comedic firepower to the genre-blending project.
Demascus was originally completed in 2022 but became a casualty of AMC Networks’ cost-cutting spree in 2023. Despite being shelved, the company hinted in an SEC filing that select titles might “realize some future licensing and other revenue.” Tubi has now given Demascus that second chance.
“Through his titular character Demascus, Tearrance Chisholm asks one of life’s simplest questions: What does it take to be a good man? And he answers it with some of the most surprising and nuanced revelations one could expect,” said executive producer Mark Johnson. “We thank AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this seriocomic series and Tubi for its steadfast conviction that it belongs on the air.”
Tubi executives echoed that enthusiasm, calling Demascus a perfect fit for its platform.
“We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus—a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains,” said Samuel Harowitz, SVP of Content Acquisition and Partnerships at Tubi. “At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms, and Demascus is exactly the kind of original storytelling we’re proud to spotlight.”
Behind the scenes, Kirk A. Moore and Chisholm serve as co-showrunners. The series is executive produced by Mark Johnson and Myki Bajaj through Gran Via Productions.
