Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is set to be honored with the prestigious Golden Eye award at this year’s Zurich Film Festival, with the British actor scheduled to appear in person to accept the prize on 29 September. The two-time Academy Award nominee will also present his latest film, The Thing With Feathers, in which he stars and serves as producer through his banner SunnyMarch and Lobo Films.
Cumberbatch will participate in the festival’s ZFF Masters program, offering a rare opportunity for fans and emerging filmmakers to learn from the acclaimed performer’s extensive body of work. Zurich Film Festival director Christian Jungen praised the actor’s artistic range and depth. “Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the most versatile character actors of his generation. He comes from the theater, masters his craft in every role and gives his characters emotional depth – whether as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game or as superhero Doctor Strange in the Marvel universe,” Jungen said. “We have shown many of his films at the ZFF in recent years and are delighted to be able to welcome him to Zurich in person for the first time – both as an actor and as the producer of The Thing With Feathers.”
Though seven of Cumberbatch’s films have screened at Zurich since 2007’s Atonement, this will mark his first in-person appearance at the festival. The actor expressed gratitude for the recognition. “I am honoured to be invited to the Zurich Film Festival to receive the Golden Eye Award,” Cumberbatch said in a statement. “This festival is important in recognising, encouraging and supporting all filmmakers across the world, with emphasis on inspiring new talent and voices, something close to my heart. I am delighted to be accepting this special award.”
With an illustrious career spanning stage, television, and film, Cumberbatch is celebrated for both mainstream and prestige roles. He earned widespread acclaim as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, brought Marvel’s Doctor Strange to life, voiced the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy, and delivered memorable performances in films such as 12 Years a Slave, Atonement, and Star Trek Into Darkness. His Oscar-nominated turns in The Imitation Game and The Power of the Dog further cemented his reputation as one of the most dynamic actors of his generation. Most recently, he showcased his comedic side in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme.
Cumberbatch stars in Dylan Southern’s The Thing With Feathers, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year. He will next appear opposite Olivia Colman in Jay Roach’s upcoming feature The Roses, a contemporary British reimagining of the 1989 black comedy The War of the Roses.
