This August, audiences across India will be treated to a rare cinematic celebration as five of Guru Dutt’s most iconic films return to the big screen in stunning 4K restorations. Marking the legendary filmmaker’s centenary, Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, in collaboration with NFDC-NFAI, is bringing his timeless classics to over 250 theatres across the country from August 8 to 10.
The nationwide retrospective will feature Pyaasa (1957), Aar Paar (1954), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Mr. & Mrs. 55 (1955), and Baaz (1953) — films that showcase the extraordinary range and poetic storytelling that made Guru Dutt one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.
“Guru Dutt’s films are timeless masterpieces that have influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike,” said Sushilkumar Agrawal, MD & CEO, Ultra Media and Entertainment Group, which owns the rights to the films. “This initiative is not just a tribute to Guru Dutt’s legacy, but also a significant cultural movement to bridge generations through cinema. We are honoured to present his classics in restored versions so that both devoted fans and new audiences can relive the magic on the big screen.”
The restoration of these classics is part of the National Film Heritage Mission, an initiative by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. “Restoring Guru Dutt’s films goes far beyond reviving old reels,” said Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, NFDC. “It’s about safeguarding a priceless legacy that defines the soul of Indian cinema. These films are restored as part of the National Film Heritage Mission… ensuring that Guru Dutt’s timeless vision continues to resonate with audiences, now and for years to come.”
The event promises not only nostalgia but a reintroduction of cinematic heritage to newer generations — from the lyrical despair of Pyaasa, to the noir-style romance of Aar Paar, the emotional richness of Chaudhvin Ka Chand, the satirical brilliance of Mr. & Mrs. 55, and the colonial-era drama Baaz, Guru Dutt’s directorial debut.
For cinephiles, students of cinema, and lovers of classic storytelling, this is more than just a screening — it is a window into the soul of one of Indian cinema’s greatest legends.
