Swedish screen legend Stellan Skarsgård will receive the prestigious Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 31st edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival this August, marking a celebration of both his prolific career and enduring connection with the festival.
As a patron and curator of the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation, Skarsgård has helped elevate emerging voices in cinema, including presenting a scholarship to Irish filmmaker Juanita Wilson during the festival’s 15th edition in 2009.
“The Sarajevo Film Festival remains unwavering and driven in its aim to highlight subjects of great consequence, underscored by an intense lust for life. I love going there,” Skarsgård said, reaffirming his deep affection for the festival’s spirit.
The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo has previously been awarded to an elite list of global filmmakers and actors including Angelina Jolie, Ruben Östlund, Jesse Eisenberg, Meg Ryan, and Charlie Kaufman. This year, festival director Jovan Marjanović says Skarsgård is a natural addition to that distinguished lineage.
“It is a true honor to present the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo to Stellan Skarsgård, an actor of remarkable depth, strength, and integrity,” said Marjanović. “Stellan has been a longtime friend of Sarajevo, and we are delighted to welcome him back. His career is filled with unforgettable roles in films that challenge, move, and stay with audiences. This award is a heartfelt thank you for his outstanding contribution to cinema and for the continued support he has shown to our festival.”
Skarsgård’s career spans over 150 film and television roles, earning him global recognition as one of Sweden’s finest actors. He began acting at fifteen in the TV series Bombi Bitt and I, before building a strong foundation in theater and Swedish cinema. His international breakout came with The Simple-Minded Murderer (1982), which won him the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival.
Hollywood took notice with his role as a Russian submarine captain in The Hunt for Red October (1990), launching a steady stream of international performances that blended art-house gravitas with mainstream appeal. He became a recurring collaborator with Lars von Trier, starring in Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac—films that solidified his reputation as a fearless performer in emotionally complex roles.
He featured in Good Will Hunting, Amistad, Ronin, and Goya’s Ghosts, while also entertaining global audiences as Bootstrap Bill Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean and Erik Selvig in Marvel’s Thor franchise. He also showcased his lighter side in the Mamma Mia! musical hits.
On television, he earned critical acclaim for the BBC series River and later won a Golden Globe and earned an Emmy nomination for his role in HBO’s Chernobyl. Most recently, he’s continued captivating audiences in Dune: Part One & Two, Andor, The Simpsons, and the Cannes Grand Prix-winning Sentimental Value.
The Sarajevo Film Festival will run from 15 to 22 August, with Skarsgård’s tribute expected to be one of the highlights of its 31st edition.
